| [ | mood |
| | rejuvenated | ] | Wow! I had no idea we had so much power! I thought we feminists were secretly despised and mocked in nearly every corner of society and that, while lip-service was paid to "equality," women on the whole are treated as soulless sex-objects or drudges, especially in our popular culture. Boy, was I was wrong:
"The feminist movement has had an immense effect on American culture, laws, education and social relationships. A principal tenet of the doctrine of Political Correctness, feminism is the prevailing dogma on university campuses and in the book industry. The feminists are powerful enough in the media, in schools and colleges, and in politics and government to intimidate most of their opposition, especially men."
Hooray! Now we'll get a female president for sure! Obama and McCain should just go crying to their mothers--- they better, or else we'll whack them over the head with our dogmas! Thank you, Phyllis Schafly, for these encouraging words! |

Your Dog Is In Heaven Now, With No One To Feed Him By Mary Othmar March 17, 2004 | Issue 40•11
Come over here and sit on Mommy's lap. I've got some bad news, Tommy. Are you ready? Tommy, while you were at school today, Sparky got out of the backyard and ran in front of a truck. I rushed him to the vet, but there was nothing she could do.
I'm so sorry, honey. I know that you loved Sparky very much, but I'm afraid he's gone to Doggie Heaven. Remember learning about Heaven in Sunday school? Doggie Heaven is like that, but there are no people there, because it's a place for dogs to spend forever, romping and playing with other dogs.
Hmm, that's a good question, honey. I don't know who's going to feed Sparky. I guess no one. ( Read more... ) |

I'm in terrible danger of adopting a cat.
My neighborhood, Oregon Hill, has more alley cats that I've ever seen. And the word seems to have gone out amongst them that I am a sucker. It's not unusual for me to be chased by mewing, pleading kitties on my way to class.
Maybe I can convince my dog that cats do not equal dinner. Probably not, though. |

The following is from The Boston Globe. (www.boston.com)
Op-ed Perpetrating the autism myth By Benjamin Kruskal and Carole Allen January 31, 2008 IN TONIGHT'S premiere episode of the ABC legal drama "Eli Stone," the protagonist is a lawyer who has spent most of his professional life defending large corporations. A vision inspires him to change direction, and he starts by suing a vaccine manufacturer, representing the mother of an autistic child who claims that a vaccine caused the child's autism. The dramatic high point is reached when the chief executive of the company is forced to admit on the stand that he wouldn't allow his own daughter to receive the vaccine in question. The jury awards multimillion-dollar compensation to the child's mother.
The cause of autism is not entirely understood, but considerable evidence demonstrates that most autistic children have abnormalities present at or before birth. ( Read more... )
I tend to agree with Drs. Kruskal and Allen. But it also goes to show just how little people trust doctors and the medical community anymore, probably because they've been ripped off so much. |

Hi, I'm still alive, but I had the plague for like three weeks. Plus I'm staying at my mom's house right now and she doesn't have a computer. Anyway, though, I'm still around, I still have AIM, don't worry. If you were worrying. Which you probably weren't. |

| [ | mood |
| | drained | ] | So I missed the workshop today, and I am sure that Cokal will be wroth. I was the victim, I think, of a series of unfortunate events (see previous entry.) Because I don't have internet where I am currently living, e-mailing my poem was difficult. I had to take my computer to a friend's house, plug it in to a spare ethernet cable, and send it out- only it didn't send, and because, again, I don't have e-mail, I didn't find this out until this morning. Naturally, I freaked out, and contemplated not going to the workshop, and forgot to print out everybody's stuff. I go over to my friend's house after class to drown my sorrows and check to see if Cokal replied to my desperate and pitiful e-mail, and she made a good argument for my coming to the workshop, mainly that the purpose of the workshop was to have a community of writers and receive different kinds of feedback etc., and that I could print out my work and we could read it there. This was around 3:00, the workshop was at 4- or so I thought. Anyway, I was all frazzled and nervous and in the confusion of the rapid change of plans I forgot to bring my computer, so no poem, and then I remembered that I didn't have everyone's poem, and then I tried to print everything out but the VCU internet was super slow, and then I found out that the worshop had actually started an hour ago and that it was on the other side of campus and I just gave up. I didn't want to show up if I wasn't prepared, which sucked, because I'd really wanted to go to this. I'm having a rough day. I need a hug. |

I'm so freaking tired. And somebody on the bad British soap that's playing in my hostel keeps screaming "BOB! BBBOOOBBB!" and it is distracting.
Still, I'll try to post a bit of what I've done since July:
I lost internet access when I changed rooms in the Margaret Macdonald House, so I was a bit desolate. But the Monday after everybody else left, I climbed Ben A'an near Loch Katrine with Michelle and Chelsea from the Glasgow Workshop, which was BEAUTIFUL- will attach pictures to facebook when get a chance. We went into these woods and then came out onto this rocky, heather covered landscape...gorgeous gorgeous gorgeus gorgeous. Gorgeous.
Then went on a bit of a tour of Scotland and managed to make my way all the way up to Orkney- which is in the middle of nowhere, frigid, and desolate. And now I have a cold. But I got to see a lot of Scotland. I'll head back to Glasgow tomorrow (I'm in this slightly sketchy part of Edinburgh right now,) relax, and maybe do something special on my last day, depending on how I feel. I miss Jason and all my peeps in Richmond, but at the same time, Scotland is just about the best place ever. If anybody wants to hang out, I'll be in town and unjet-lagged on Saturday, so gimme a call then @ 747-3906. |

Edinburgh is such a beautiful city. For awhile, I wished we were staying there instead of Glasgow- then I saw about ten tour busses all lined up in a row and filled to the brim with Japanese and Americans. Glasgow is better, I think, in the end. It's a real city with a lived-in feel and not a just a museum with houses in it. Still though, it was gooooorgeous and I would recommend it to anyone. |
